A village of Arabic origin, the name "Massamá" derives from the toponym "Mactamã", which translates as "place where you drink good water". Located halfway between the fortresses of Lisbon and Sintra, it was here that the ancient warriors, hunters and travelers used to stop during their journeys to rest and refresh themselves and their mounts.
A very fertile region, it was once considered one of the best wheat producing areas in the country.
After the inauguration of the Lisbon-Sintra railroad line, on April 2, 1887, Massamá began to grow with the construction of small houses, from the Chafariz area to Rua da Milharada, and it is estimated that in 1900 it had a population of around half a thousand inhabitants.
The extraordinary urban development in the last thirty years has given rise to new and differentiated housing clusters, autonomous and with a life of their own. New roads and their respective accesses - such as the IC19 and the CREL - have also considerably improved mobility in the area.
Massamá and Monte Abraão are now cosmopolitan places, with their own life and ready to embrace the challenges of the future!
